West End Railway streetcars are painted different colors on different lines.

By the 1890s, 71 different lines operate, with color codes denoting the various routes (e.g., green-Roxbury; purple-Dorchester; scarlet-South Boston; pale blue-Brookline; brown-Brighton; maroon-Somerville & Charlestown). There are even plaid and chartreuse lines. The color coding ends when the lines are assumed by the Boston Elevated Railway Company in 1909 and all cars are painted green with white trim.
